How to set up Google News alerts
Google Alerts is free, takes about two minutes to set up, and is the right answer for a lot of people. Here is the full setup, the operators that make it precise, and — honestly — where it stops working.
Step by step
Open Google Alerts and sign in
Go to https://www.google.com/alerts and sign in with the Google account that should receive the emails. The alert is tied to that account, so use the inbox you actually read.
Enter your search terms
Type the phrase you want to track into the box at the top. A preview of current matching results appears immediately — treat that preview as the test. If the preview is full of irrelevant results, the alert will be too.
Open Show options and set frequency and sources
Click 'Show options'. Set How often (as-it-happens, at most once a day, at most once a week), Sources (News, Blogs, Web, Video, Books, Discussions, Finance), Language, Region, How many (Only the best results vs All results), and Deliver to (your email or an RSS feed).
Tighten the query with search operators
Use quotation marks for an exact phrase ("supply chain financing"), a minus sign to exclude a term (jaguar -car), OR between alternatives (acquisition OR merger), and site: to restrict to one publisher (site:reuters.com). These work in the alert box exactly as they do in Google search.
Click Create Alert
The alert starts immediately. You will receive mail only when Google finds something new that matches — silence can mean nothing matched, not that the alert is broken.
Manage or edit later
Return to https://www.google.com/alerts to see every alert on the account. The pencil icon edits an alert's query and options; the trash icon deletes it. Editing the query does not reset anything else about the alert.
The operators that actually matter
Most disappointing alerts are a query problem, not a tool problem. Google Alerts runs the string you give it against Google's index, so the same operators that sharpen a search sharpen an alert.
- "exact phrase" — quotation marks stop Google matching the words separately. This is the single highest-value change to most alerts.
- -exclude — a minus sign immediately before a term drops results containing it. Useful for the ambiguous-name problem (tesla -car, apple -iphone).
- OR — capitalised, between alternatives: (acquisition OR merger OR "takes a stake").
- site:example.com — restrict to a single publisher. Invert it with -site: to drop a source that keeps polluting the alert.
- intitle: — require the term in the headline rather than anywhere in the body. A strong precision lever for common words.
Choose 'All results', then tighten
The 'How many' option defaults to 'Only the best results', which silently applies Google's own quality filter on top of your query. That is a reasonable default for a broad term and a bad one for a narrow one — on a niche query it can suppress nearly everything and read as a dead alert.
The more diagnosable order is to start with 'All results', see the true volume your query produces, and then tighten the query itself with the operators above. That way the filtering is yours and you can see what it is doing.
Deliver to RSS instead of email
In 'Deliver to', choosing RSS feed gives you a feed URL instead of an inbox item. This is the option worth knowing about: it keeps alerts out of the inbox, and it lets you pipe several alerts into one reader, a Slack channel, or an automation tool.
The trade is that nothing then tells you when the feed goes quiet — you have to go looking. Email at least arrives.
Where Google Alerts stops working
Everything above is the real answer, and for a broad, unambiguous topic checked occasionally, Google Alerts is genuinely fine. The failure modes show up when the topic is narrow, the name is ambiguous, or the coverage is heavy.
- It matches strings, not meaning. An alert for a company name cannot tell the company from the common noun, and no amount of quoting fixes a genuinely ambiguous name.
- It does not deduplicate. When twelve outlets syndicate one wire story, you get twelve entries for one piece of news.
- It does not rank by importance. A trade-blog aggregation post and the primary source arrive with equal billing.
- Coverage is partial. Alerts run against what Google has indexed as News or Web, and plenty of publishers surface late or not at all.
- It goes quiet without telling you. There is no distinction between 'nothing happened' and 'this alert has stopped matching', which is the failure people discover months late.

This is today's real output, not a mockup. A skeptical model reviews every story and argues against it before you see it — the ones that lose that argument are never sent.
